ABOUT THE COURSE

The Range Conducting Officer (RCO) course is intended for suitably experienced Club members to gain the qualification necessary to allow them to sign for and run a Ministry of Defence (MoD) range. This course is a bolt-on to the NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) course. Only those who already hold an in-date NRA RSO qualification are eligible to attend this course.

Students will be taught and tested on how to operate on MoD ranges as a civilian user.

The MoD has procedures that must be understood and applied. Due to the nature of why the MoD use ranges and the level to which they wish to train to, these range procedures are very comprehensive. The details and thought required, for example with range recces or the Range Action Safety Plan (RASP), are very thorough.

The course is designed to provide essential information, test the knowledge and assess the range skills of applicants, including:

  •          Ensuring full compliance with, and the implementation of, proper safety procedures at all times.
  •          The adoption of correct procedures on DIO facilities and the furtherance of good relations with the military authorities.
  •          Maintaining control of and taking responsibility for shooting practices.
  •          The development of common standards for range conduct and discipline.

This is a 2-day course, each day running consecutively from 0830 - 1630, with a mixture of classroom and on-range practical exercises.

Successful students will be awarded the NRA Range Conducting Officer qualification and will be authorised to act as a Range Officer on MoD ranges.

The Range Conducting Officer qualification is a bolt-on to the NRA Range Saftey Officer qualification. As such, on successful completion of the course, students will receive an updated version of their NRA RSO qualification card with the NRA RCO qualification printed on the back.

Joining instructions with information on course timings and location will be emailed out around 2 weeks before the course date. *Please ensure to check your junk folder if you have not received them a week prior to the course start date.

PREPARATION

It is a requirement that each student pre-reads the Range Conducting Officers Handbook before attending the course, found by clicking here.  A hard copy of the manual will be issued on the course.

UNDER 25

If you are under 25, you can attend the course at a discounted price. Please note, the under 25 discount will be applied automatically at the final checkout screen when booking. If the discount does not appear, please continue with your booking but select to pay by BACS/ Cheque at the checkout. Then contact a member of the Training team at Training@nra.org.uk to inform them of the issue and they can provide details for you to make payment for the correct amount.

BEFORE APPLYING, PLEASE NOTE:

Students should be experienced shooters who have passed the Range Safety Officer course. Only those members who are considered to be suitable, and who stand a good chance of passing, should be put forward by their clubs. The NRA will contact Club's prior to the course to confirm whether they are happy to endorse a student's application.

The MoD requires that their ranges, when used by civilian clubs, should be run to the same standards of safety as they are when used by the military. Pass requirements are high, and the course is not to be undertaken lightly. Students must understand the level of responsibility that they are taking on.

NOT A MEMBER OF A HOME OFFICE APPROVED CLUB?

If you require a Range Conducting Officer qualification for employment purposes, you will need to attend our 3-day Commercial RO Course.

Please contact Training@nra.org.uk for more information on this course.
